Pen wiper; simple textile item, for wiping dip pen nibs; coarse weave linen piece, with purple silk edging; in the centre are purple & orange embroidered bands for wiping the pen nibs on; Horton collection. Used for cleaning ink from dip & fountain pen nibs, during & after use. A standard stationery item during the 19th century.
