Description
Steel helmet with internal padded lining; marked with 'NHSR' (National Hospital Service Reserve'; the helmet was made during the WW2 period, and may have been re-used for the NHSR after the war; The National Hospital Service Reserve was founded in 1949 and staffed by volunteers from hospital professions, such as doctors, nurses and first aiders. The NHSR was part of the Civil Defence services first established in the 1930s in preparation for air raids that were expected to be part of any future war. After the Second World War, the emphasis shifted to coping with the aftermath of a nuclear attack. The NHSR closed in 1968 when the Civil Defence services were disbanded.
