Stoneware jug, incomplete; 'Bellarmine' or Frechen item; salt glaze stoneware; bulbous vessel, upper section only; applied loop handle with finger marks; applied 'mask' of bearded face on neck. Probably made in the Netherlands, this vessel incorporates a satirical image of Cardinal Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621). He was an opponent of the Dutch Reformed Church.
