Description
English engraving of a sea chart (map) showing theThames Estuary, the Medway & east coast of England as far north as Lincolnshire; it was originally published in 1693 in 'Great Britain's Coasting Pilot', an atlas of 48 charts of British waters surveyed by Captain Greenvile Collins between 1681-88; it was reprinted, and this copy may be as late as 1738; Collins was hydrographer to King Charles II, and was sponsored by Trinity House to whom he dedicated this printed chart; the chart covers from Dover to Spurn Head, and is orientated with north to the right; a large inset shows the course of the Thames between Sheppey & the City of London, and is orientated with the north at the bottom (i.e. upside down); embellished with images of a warship & an allegorical figure of 'Father Time' (?) with a cornucopia ('Horn of Plenty'); framed & glazed. The first overall image is that of another example, not the museum object; the remaining 3 selected images are A10990.
