Description
Pencil sketch of a Romano-British lead coffin from the Maidstone Road,Chatham; as reported in Arch Cant XII (1878); for another sketch see A11430/9; for fragments of the lead coffin see A2541/1-2. Previously mounted for display; on the 16th May 1878 a lead coffin was dug up in the SW corner of the New Cemetery, Chatham, near the Maidstone Road; the coffin was 6' long & decorated with 'billet' moulding worked at the head into a triangular pattern with a scallop design; the coffin had been within an iron-bound wooden case; it contained the skeleton of an adult male with a glass vessel; outside were two other glass vessels & two ceramic pots.
