Description
Stoneware jug; 'Bellarmine' or Frechen item; salt glaze stoneware; bulbous vessel; applied loop handle; applied 'mask' of bearded face on neck; medallion with coat of arms & indecipherable motto on body; reconstructed from fragments. Probably made in the Netherlands, this vessel incorporates a satirical image of Cardinal Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621). He was an opponent of the Dutch Reformed Church.
