Description
Stoneware jug; 'Bellarmine' or Frechen item; salt glaze stoneware; bulbous vessel; applied loop handle; applied 'mask' of bearded face on neck; medallion with 8-petalled flower; contains some small rusted nails - possibly a 'witches bottle' deposit? Probably made in the Netherlands, this vessel incorporates a satirical image of Cardinal Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621). 'Found below Jasper's shop, May 1896'. Jasper had shops at 47 & 106 High Street. Used by Goss as a model to make a replica in china.
