Description
Watercolour painting; shows the tomb of bishop John De Sheppey (died 1360) shortly after it was rediscovered in Rochester Cathedral in 1825; shows recumbent figure in robes & mitre, hands praying, dog at feet. The tomb had been walled up in the 17th century; restoration work by the architect Lewis Cottingham in 1825 revealed the tomb and this painting was done shortly after by John Harris, an artist employed by the architect. Although the painting has been remounted & framed, on the reverse is the original handwritten title & an address (of Harris, the painter?); it has blurred slightly through old water damage.
