Description
Silver folding fish measure; hallmarked London sterling silver, dating to 1811; the measure is marked out with 7", one long edge is saw-toothed; folds in the middle. Used to measure the guage of fishing nets to control the size of fish caught. Used by the Water Bailiffs of the River Medway, with the authority to challenge anyone fishing on the river. Very young fish were not allowed to be taken as this was leading to stock depletion. Individuals catching undersize fish could be fined or even taken to court.
