Description
Small silver plated tipstave with ridged wooden handle & solid crown top.
Tipstaves were marks of authority carried by court and police officials. Gillingham mayors were often photographed holding this item. The top cross unscrews & is removable (presumably for cleaning). This became part of the mayoral insignia on the formation of the Borough of Gillingham in 1903 (though previously had served as a Constable's staff).
