Description
Pair of Japanese chainmail sleeves (kote) from a panoply of Samurai armour (see A13341); probably late Edo period; the metalwork has a coating of dark brown lacquer to decorate and protect the steel from corrosion; the small sections of plate armour on the back of the hand & thumb are linked with areas of very light chainmail; the armour is attached to a textile sleeve that laces up on the inside; the textile is very frayed and in poor condition; the chainmail is badly damaged on the left sleeve; the lacquer finish is generally fair, but does show some minor corrosion; considerable conservation would be required to bring this up to display standard.
