Description
Pencil sketch; well drawn, quite 'naive'; shows a view over the Medway from Strood Tide Mill towards old Rochester Bridge (simplified depiction) & castle; the tide mill was probably built in the 16th century, demolished 1858; in the 18th century it was owned by the Hulkes family, one of whom drowned in the pond; in the early 19th century it was sold to Mr Horsnaill who fitted a steam engine to augment the power; also visible are small boats on the river; unframed.
