Description
Flintlock pistol, one of a pair; 25 bore; octagonal barrel; made by John Manton of London; original finish, first type of gold cartouche set into the barrel marked 'MANTON'. Has steel butt socket for attachment of shoulder stock (increased accuracy). The underside of the barrels bear the proof marks of the London Gunmakers Company; early, pre-numbered, uncased pair of pistols. this type of weapon was used by army officers for general service and civilians, and (occasionally) for duelling. Bequeathed by Golding-Bird in 1939.
