Description
Ephemera; Coutts bank cheque signed by Charles Dickens for the amount £35, payable to James Sheridan Knowles on 6/1/1849 from the 'Shakespeare House Curatorship account' (Dickens fundraised for this with amateur theatrical benefit events); this shows Dickens' involvement with the 'Shakespeare House' who were a group of eminent writers dedicated to the promotion of Shakespeare's works on stage, and the preservation of his birthplace in Stratford-on-Avon. Presumably the item given in November 1964 by Mr Cooksley.
