Records of the Church Commissioners: Rochester Capitular Estates 1349-1946

INTRODUCTION

The estate of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester was not confined to the Diocese of Rochester, for almost as much lay in the Diocese of Canterbury, as far east as the Isle of Thanet, as in Rochester. There was also a little property in London, Surrey and Buckinghamshire. Much of the estate consisted of parsonages, and there was considerable urban property in Chatham, Rochester, and Strood.

Leases were normally for twenty one years and were usually renewed after seven. Only the reserved rent is mentioned in the deeds; the fine and improved rent are given in the copies of the Dean's Book, 1660-1866 (CCRc/E1).

This collection represents that part of the Dean and Chapter records transferred from Rochester to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1860s. The earlier documents remained in the custody of the Clerk to the Dean and Chapter.

Part of the estate was surveyed in 1623 (CCRc/E3), and the whole by Parliament in 1649 (CCRc/E4). Many later terriers have also survived: some are to be found among the Estate Papers (CCRc/E5-E7); others remain with the title deeds, as follows:-

T1 Ashford 5 Terriers 1714-1722
T2 Bapchild 1 Terrier 1723
T3 Bearsted 11 Terriers 1630-1801
T5 Bearsted and Boxley 1 Terrier 1842
T8 Boughton Monchelsea and Langley 1 Terrier 1718
T10 Boxley 7 Terriers 1698-1739
T36 Darenth 2 Terriers 1716-1723
T39 West Farleigh and Barming 7 Terriers 1717-1753
T63, T64 Goudhurst 7 Terriers 1713-1716
