I am researching the Thomas family, who came from the Hollingbourne, Frittenden area. Hannah Mary Thomas nee Alexander was born in Hollingbourne in 1843 and married Thomas Thomas who was either a wheelwright or shipwright at Chatham Dockyard. They had two sons Arthur and Henry (my grandfather) the sons moved to Belvedere Kent, where my father Henry Thomas was born to Bertha Louise nee Andrews and Henry Thomas. Bertha Louise died in 1915 and Henry died in Rochester in 1940. I know there were some brothers but other than they used to live in the Rochester area know nothing more about them. It would be a great help if anyone has any information on the Thomas, Andrews or Alexanders in the Chatham, Rochester area.

An extract from my family tree 100 yrs ago 8 dec 1906.
as told by the brother:
we had in the family six of us boys and 5 sisters. we lived at 13 baker street Rochester. Prehaps why my memory was so long:I had a brother Rowland phillip smith who was scalded to death. The circumstances I vividly remember. My mother had made a meat suet pudding, for our dinner, she had just lifted an oval iron pot off the coal fire, and put it in the hearth. she was about to put the pudding in the pot, which was full of boiling water when an urgent knock came to the front door. She put the pudding which was in a linen cloth on the table, forgetting the small babe was not tied in his small chair . she went to the front door, when she heard a scream, rushed back into the room and found the little soul had fallen head first into the pot of boiling water. There was no guards to put round the open fires in those days 1906 ,no ambulances handy no telephones,my mother wrapped the little fellow in a blanket, and rushed 2 miles too St Bartholemew hospital Rochester. The little soul died later in hospital. my mother was demented.
The Smith family lived and worked in Rochester from the 1650's right up until the 1930's(Smith)
of which all records have been searched from the Medway site of St Margaret's Rochester.

Has anyone any pre -1980 photographs or information on the building which was, until recently, "French Music" - a musical instrument shop. Prior to this, it was "V E French Ltd " which sold instruments, radios, etc. It is situated in Duncan Road, Gillingham and was, amongst other things, a tailor's shop in the past, run by a Mr Fielding or similar. It started life as a private dwelling known as "Rupert Villa". It has recently been converted to a musical promotions office.

Hi, would anyone have any information on my great great great grandfather. this is the information that I have on him . JAMES HAYES MARRIED ANN BENNETT IN EYNSFORD KENT ON 27 OCT 1827. SHE WAS BORN IN MEOPHAM KENT 1805 HER FATHER'S NAME WAS ROBERT BENNETT. I DON'T KNOW WHO HE MARRIED OR WHERE HE WAS BORN. I DON'T KNOW WHERE JAMES WAS BORN.
I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT WHERE THE BENNETTS CAME FROM, WHO ANN BENNETT'S MOTHER WAS AND MORE INFORMATION ON THE HAYES FAMILY, WHO JAMES HAYES PARENTS WERE.
I THINK THAT JAMES HAYES MUST HAVE BEEN BORN IN 1800. SO I DON'T NEED THE CENSUS RETURN. JUST TO FIND OUT MORE ON THESE FAMILIES AND WHERE THEY CAME FROM EVEN IF ITS JUST A WEDDING OR BIRTH CERTIFICATE IT WOULD BE A START.
ALSO MY GREATGREATGREATGRANDMOTHER MARRIED TWICE.
ANN BENNETT MARRIED THOMAS TREADWELL IN NORTHFLEET IN NOVEMBER 1848. SHE DIED AND THOMAS TREADWELL MARRIED MARY ANN SADDLER WHO WAS BORN IN 1820. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF JOSEPH SADDLER.
I DON' T KNOW WHERE THE SADDLER FAMILY CAME FROM.
THE TREADWELL FAMILY AFTER 1820 HAD MOVED TO FARNINGHAM THEN TO LONDON. I CAN'T GO BACK ANY FURTHER THAN 1780 ON THE TREADWELL SIDE SO I WILL LEAVE THIS FAMILY AND TRY ANOTHER TIME.

BUT IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFORMATION ON THE OTHER FAMILIES THAT I HAVE MENTIONED I WOULD BE GRATEFUL FOR YOUR HELP OR ANY INFORMATION THAT YOU COULD SHARE.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP

I would like to expand this by knowing more about the Kent family from which Charles came. His grandfather, William Brown Spencelayh was born in Whitby, Yorkshire in 1769. His father, Henry Thomas Spencelayh, was born in Chatham in 1829. Charles was apparently the youngest of 11 children, although I have so far only confirmed 7 of them. Any information on Thorneycroft (including any deviant spelling) and specifically any links with Norwich Thornicrofts. I have found a tenuous link in the 1891 but have been unable to pursue it.
I think that there is also a link locally between local Boormans and Thorneycrofts. A William Thorneycroft ran a Licenced Victuallers 380, Chatham High Street in 1906 - 07 which later became the Royal George (later run by the Boorman family although I am not sure if this is the same lineage). Any info on marriages between the two families probably late 19thc - mid 20thc would be good.
Most importantly I need information regarding Albert George & Major George Thorneycroft, who latterly lived at 'Eva House' and then 'Brownrigg' in Walderslade, Chatham. A relative said that he moved to Starkey Castle Wouldham but can't find record. I'm sure and descendents could answer my questions between families. There was a daughter called June.
Anything on these names please.

Robert married Kate Shepherd around 1885 and they had a child born in 1886. PETERS, Thomas of Halling nr. Snodland:

Any information regarding a Thomas Peters, lime burner, who lived in Halling (north of Snodland) for most of his working life. He married Harriet Jeater (of Dorking) in St. Martin-in-the Fields, London in 1823, and died 25 February 1881, aged 80. His gravestone (also his wife's) is in plain view as you approach the front of the church in Halling.

There is a possibility his brother was William Peters (born c1795, died 27th January 1867) who was involved in running the lime/cement works at Merstham and Burham, with his sons Joseph, Edwin and Henry Peters, and later his grandson Joseph Stilwell Peters.

The Peters Works was on the east side of the Medway opposite Snodland, whether it used to be or became Wouldham Hall Works I don't know...
However any links between Thomas Peters, his potential brother William, where they were born and any information about their parents would be most welcome.
Thank you.

Hi there,

I'm trying to find information relating to John COLLINSON of Sratford, Exxex and his family. He was living with his family in Stratford around 1782 and may have had a wife that died around the sametime. I know there were at least 3 children. Two of which were called Eliza and Henry Collison. The family moved from Stratford to Bath, Somerset between 1783-1791. John Collison was known as a factor, may well have been a cheese monger and was known as a 'gentleman'. If anyone recognises and of the Collison family name could you please get in touch.

I am a resident of Galveston, Texas in the United States of America. Some time ago I obtained a Winget tractor. It is a single cylinder diesel tractor powered by an air cooled Lister Diesel engine.

I have restored the tractor to running condition and have partially restord the sheet metal work. I have approximated the original paint by finding areas that still had some of the paint intact.

I do not know if the tractor originally had a Winget logo, either stencil or decal. Nor do I know the date of manufacture other than it was prior to 1970.

I obviously cannot afford the trip to England simply to view pictures and review brochures about the tractor. Is it possible that someone could check the archives for a brochure or photo of the tractor from Winget and and the years of manufacture? I intend to show the tractor at antique tractor shows and need as much information (within reason) as possible.

Thank you for any help you might be able to give me.

Bob McPherson

Name: LINCOLN / FURRELLEmail: handpostcot@aol.com
My interest is in the decendants of Nathaniel Lincoln (b.1781) m. Sarah (b.1786). The first record of children is Katherine Lincoln (b.1809? London) m. 25.02.1832 Frederick Furrell of Rochester, Kent at St Margaret, Rochester. They appear to have had 10 children.
Katherine had other brothers and sisters, but there is a large gap in my records. In 1841 Census Nathaniel and Sarah Lincoln are at Fort Pitts with Henrietta (b. 1821, Kent) Edward (b. 1823, Kent), Albert (b. 1824 Kent).
Edward Lincoln is my great grand father x 2 on my fathers side.
If you have any information that might help to fill in the gaps I would love to hear from you.
Kind regards. Carol.

In the late 1800s early 1900s there was a firm of builders and contractors and shop fitters in West Street, Sittingbourne.

I have a copy of an advertisement in the Sittingbourne, Milton & District Directory. They were undertakers, gasfitters, plumbers, etc.

Would anyone know when this firm ceased to exist? Was it sold or closed?
Perhaps someone's ancestors worked there?

I have information re the family but would like to know more about their firm.

Are business records stored anywhere?

Hello Everybody,
I am doing research on my Maternal grndmother`s family that may still live in the Maidstone area.
My grandmother was Alice Eleanor ELSE,born 15th February 1883 at Upper Faut Road. Her father was Edward ELSE and he was a General Dealer. Her mother(my great grandmother)was Emily Else, formerly BARNES.Of course this leads me to look even further into the BARNES line!!
I have in my possesion a memorial notice for my great uncle Victor Robert ELSE who after WW 1 married a girl from Vancouver Canada. He was definitely a brother to my grandmother,Alice Eleanor ELSE,as my mother used to talk about her uncle Victor. There are also a couple of my grandmother`s brothers who went off to Perth,Australia. They were Albert and Lewis and I have contact with their descendants over there.
I was just wondering if there are any either ELSE`S or BARNES` out there who may be relatives of mine and who can give me more information of my family`s origins,
Sincerely,
Don Landy

Name: BINGHAM / FRINDSBURYEmail: lats@blueyonder.co.uk
I am researching my husbands maternal family. One branch of which, lived in FRINDSBURY up to at least 1901. Harry and Mary BINGHAM were then living at 8, Medway Terrace.
Harry was born abt 1857 in Kingsnorth Kent, Mary Ann born Milton Kent, abt 1859.
Children were ,
Mary Ann born 1880
Ellen born 1885 both Faversham Kent.
Alice 1889.
William 1891.
Emily Jane 1892.
Edward 1894.
Phoebe 1899.
All born Frindsbury.

Are there any BINGHAMs still in the Medway area that may be descended from Harry and Mary Ann. He would be my husbands Gt Gt Uncle.
His parents were ,
George and Ann Eliza Bingham, who originally came from Woodchurch and Bilsington, near Ashford Kent.
Cannot verify anything on them after 1901 , as I think they may have moved to the Greenwich area when the brickmaking business went into decline in this area.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
