Our Grandfather - WILLIAM MARCUS FLACK was apparently a well-known character and was known as BILL. He had a connection with STARKEY CASTLE in 1915 (approx.)- probably worked as a gardener. Name: Maureen GibbsEmail: bonnytyler@aapt..net.au
Hello,

My name is Maureen from Australia.

I'm hoping to contact anyone researching the COUVES families.

I have tried to research back to the original Mr. COUVES who was an exciseman by occupation and lived at JINNYGUM, CHATHAM, England, which would have been in the early 1700's. It would be nice if I could find someone to cross check my research with and exchange information.

My 3rd Great Grandfather, Richard Tyler christened 5th October 1788 at
Gravesend, married Letitia Couves at Chalk on 4/1/1813. I think she was
born round about 1794.

I have tried to trace her family back through the Census Records and the IGI
as well as a Couves Family History document given to me.

As far as I can ascertain her father was Charles Couves (ships carpenter born about 1769) and her mother was also named Letitia.

Charles Solomon Couves a postmaster at Gravesend was her brother 1799 - 1861.

There was another brother called Jesse who was a sailmaker by trade.
(Augustus Jesse Arthur Couves born 1825 might be him).

The document handed down states that there was also a sister named Ann married to a man named Campbell who kept a drapers shop. (All that I can
find that could possibly be this sister is an Ann Laura Couves who married a William Kemball 15/7/1833 at Shorne, Kent. Kemball and Campbell sound alike?) The 1851 Census seems to confirm that Kemball is her married name as she is widowed with her two daughters of the same names as the document and her father Charles Couves is living with her.

Edward John Couves born 1805 is not mentioned in the document however it seems that he is another brother.

I hope the above is enough to link me to someone else with the same tree.

Your help would be very much appreciated,

Maureen

I am researching PEARCE, FLETCHER, SAMSON and GRINSTEAD these being the names of my maternal and paternal grandparents. I would be glad to hear from anyone who may be able to help by contacting me via this message board. All have associations with the Medway Towns and surrounding villages.I would particularly like to hear from anyone with information on John PEARCE who was a Currier by trade and lived and/or conducted his trade at Rhode Street Chatham. He married Eliza HIVES about 1820 and they had at least four daughters and a son all of whom were baptised at the Great Ebenezer Chapel, Clover Street, Chatham. After the 1841 census they seem to vanish. John was baptised in 1800 at St Nicholas, Rochester.
Also of interest to me are any descendants of Henry GEORGE born 1846 at St Albans. He married Harriet Charlotte PEARCE in Medway in 1867 where they lived and brought up their family.
Please note that this message replaces my previous one as the e-mail address quoted is no longer valid.

I am researching my great great great grandfather, Hugh HARDY, who could have been born in ROCHESTER or GILLINGHAM, in about 1765. Family lore has it that he was illegitimate, amd could have been a son of Sir Charles HARDY, conceived during the time Sir Charles was MP for ROCHESTER. Therefore Hugh's mother may have had a different surname, possibly 'ELDER' or 'FOREMAN'. She might have been called Ann.
If anyone can cast any light on Hugh's parentage, I should be very very grateful.

BARTHOLOMEW - My gtgrandfather George Bartholomew was aged 25yrs (brickfield labourer) when he married Margaret Winch (21yrs) in the register office Milton 27th July 1867. His father is named as Thomas Bartholomew (labourer). We have been researching the family tree for almost 20yrs and although we have had a lot of success on the Winch side the Bartholomews have remained a mystery. All we know is that the family came from Sittingbourne at the time of George's marriage and it is thought he was born in Billsington. Any information on the Bartholomews would be greatly appreciated.

What a brilliant site!

I'm looking for WATERS and BELTON families of Gravesend area.

Thomas WATERS married Frances BELTON at Swanscombe 1808 (both of this parish).

The only children I've found are William (1811) and Belton (1814) both bp at St. George Gravesend.

Another child, Thomas b abt 1822, came to Australia.

I'm also interested in Robert WATERS bp 1835 St. George Gravesend, son of William Robert WATERS and Elizabeth (maiden name not known) and how/if he is related to Thomas. Robert also came to Australia.

Does anyone have these families in their tree?

Subject: Gt. Gt. Gt. Grandfather Thomas ROBINSON, b. CHALLOCK, Kent, 1775. Married Eliza PARAMOUR in 1802 in DOVER, Kent. She was born 30 January 1782 in Dover.

On the christening entry for one of Thomas' children in 1814, Thomas gave his occupation as MARINER. His second oldest son, Joseph ROBINSON, my Gt. Gt. Grandfather (b. 1805 Dover), eventually made his way to the Maidstone area and married in Boxley in 1826. My query concerns how Joseph made it to Boxley before the age of the railway. Would the fact that his father was a MARINER play a part in this? Secondly, do any lists exist for Mariners from Kent in those years? Your comments would be most welcome.

Has anyone any pre -1980 photographs or information on the building which was, until recently, "French Music" - a musical instrument shop. Prior to this, it was "V E French Ltd " which sold instruments, radios, etc. It is situated in Duncan Road, Gillingham and was, amongst other things, a tailor's shop in the past, run by a Mr Fielding or similar. It started life as a private dwelling known as "Rupert Villa". It has recently been converted to a musical promotions office.

Hi, would anyone have any information on my great great great grandfather. this is the information that I have on him . JAMES HAYES MARRIED ANN BENNETT IN EYNSFORD KENT ON 27 OCT 1827. SHE WAS BORN IN MEOPHAM KENT 1805 HER FATHER'S NAME WAS ROBERT BENNETT. I DON'T KNOW WHO HE MARRIED OR WHERE HE WAS BORN. I DON'T KNOW WHERE JAMES WAS BORN.
I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT WHERE THE BENNETTS CAME FROM, WHO ANN BENNETT'S MOTHER WAS AND MORE INFORMATION ON THE HAYES FAMILY, WHO JAMES HAYES PARENTS WERE.
I THINK THAT JAMES HAYES MUST HAVE BEEN BORN IN 1800. SO I DON'T NEED THE CENSUS RETURN. JUST TO FIND OUT MORE ON THESE FAMILIES AND WHERE THEY CAME FROM EVEN IF ITS JUST A WEDDING OR BIRTH CERTIFICATE IT WOULD BE A START.
ALSO MY GREATGREATGREATGRANDMOTHER MARRIED TWICE.
ANN BENNETT MARRIED THOMAS TREADWELL IN NORTHFLEET IN NOVEMBER 1848. SHE DIED AND THOMAS TREADWELL MARRIED MARY ANN SADDLER WHO WAS BORN IN 1820. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF JOSEPH SADDLER.
I DON' T KNOW WHERE THE SADDLER FAMILY CAME FROM.
THE TREADWELL FAMILY AFTER 1820 HAD MOVED TO FARNINGHAM THEN TO LONDON. I CAN'T GO BACK ANY FURTHER THAN 1780 ON THE TREADWELL SIDE SO I WILL LEAVE THIS FAMILY AND TRY ANOTHER TIME.

BUT IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFORMATION ON THE OTHER FAMILIES THAT I HAVE MENTIONED I WOULD BE GRATEFUL FOR YOUR HELP OR ANY INFORMATION THAT YOU COULD SHARE.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP

Any information on Thorneycroft (including any deviant spelling) and specifically any links with Norwich Thornicrofts. I have found a tenuous link in the 1891 but have been unable to pursue it.
I think that there is also a link locally between local Boormans and Thorneycrofts. A William Thorneycroft ran a Licenced Victuallers 380, Chatham High Street in 1906 - 07 which later became the Royal George (later run by the Boorman family although I am not sure if this is the same lineage). Any info on marriages between the two families probably late 19thc - mid 20thc would be good.
Most importantly I need information regarding Albert George & Major George Thorneycroft, who latterly lived at 'Eva House' and then 'Brownrigg' in Walderslade, Chatham. A relative said that he moved to Starkey Castle Wouldham but can't find record. I'm sure and descendents could answer my questions between families. There was a daughter called June.
