  • Description
Ephemera; photograph of the interior of the chalet given to Charles Dickens in 1864; located in Cobham Park, now at Eastgate House; shows desk & furnishings; previously on display at the old Rochester Museum. Dimensions are of the image excluding the mount. Acquired and displayed at the museum in the early 20th century. In the past someone has inked in the edges of the furniture to heighten definition. The original image was allegedly taken by Edward Barnes in 1870, the year of Dickens' death, and shows the original appearance of the chalet interior in his lifetime. The second image attached is another copy from the same source as the museum one, though less cropped and faded.
