  • Administrative history / biography
The auditor was appointed by the Chapter for life. As a general rule he was the Chapter Clerk. Before each November Audit he checked and abstracted the accounts of both the treasurer and the receiver and matched all the bills presented against the accounts. When Edmund Barrell, one of the prebendaries, was auditor he initialed each bill as checked by him. No other auditor appears to have done so, but all the receivers' and treasurers' books have been initialed as checked by the auditor.
  • Scope and content
Presumably there was an audited abstract of the accounts for each year but only a few examples have survived (DRc/FA/1-7), along with the auditor's records of the Dean and Chapter's investment in the South Sea Company (DRc/FAs and DRc/FAv) and audited bailiffs' accounts (DRc/FAb/1).
