- Administrative history / biographyThe sacrist had the cure of souls within the Cathedral precinct, and was usually a minor canon. He was responsible for keeping the registers of baptism, marriage and burial. No marriages were solemnized in the cathedral between 1754-1866 because under the Act of 1753 the Cathedral was deemed to be extra-parochial. Persons living in the Precinct of the Cathedral were therefore married in the nearest church to the Cathedral, either St. Nicholas or St. Margaret, Rochester.
