St. Philip and St. James' Parish Church in King George Road, Walderslade, Chatham, was consecrated on on 2 June 1962 by the Bishop of Rochester. St. James' had been built before the Second World War and was situated close to the German PoW camp at Hook Meadow. Wayfield and Weeds Wood estates were built after the war. St. Philip's had been established in a scout hut at Wayfield. As the congregations grew during the 1950s and early 1960s it was decided to combine the two churches to create the parish of St. Philip and St. James. The two churches had previously formed part of St. John's parish, Chatham. St. James was known as the Mission Church Wayfield and St. Philip's was known as a conventional district church. St. James' Mission Church was superseded by St. William's, Walderslade, in 1973.
