St. James' Church was built in 1851 to serve a new parish formed in 1852 out of the medieval parish of Gravesend St. George. In 1952 the parishes of Gravesend St. George and Holy Trinity (Milton-next-Gravesend) were disbanded, Holy Trinity Church being demolished in 1963 and their areas incorporated into an enlarged St. James' parish. In 1967 St. James' parish was renamed St. George's parish and St. James' Church was demolished in 1969, the new parish being served by the original St. George's Church and briefly until 1970 by St. Andrew's Mission Church, Waterside.
