The charter of 1461 (RCA/C1/1/6) confirms that the City of Rochester had the right to sue but could also be sued. The power to make byelaws was granted in 1629. Some are recorded in the Customal.
  • Scope and content
This sub-collection comprises byelaws, litigations, contracts and recorder's opinions. The contracts, agreements and licences relate to construction of housing estates, sewerage systems, roads, tramways, entertainments, etc. Contracts regarding the construction of housing estates are more detailed than the City Surveyor's files as they contain specifications and building plans. There is also a small collection of documents relating to the consultation of the recorder by the council on various legal matters.
