- Administrative history / biographyThe charter of 1461 confirms the right to acquire and hold property. The lands acquired lay not only within the boundaries of the City of Rochester but also in Kent (for instance Cobham Estate) and in London (parish of St. Botolph without Aldersgate, and Lavender Sweep Estate in Battersea). Some properties were purchased in order to carry out street improvements and to regenerate some areas of the City, for instance the construction of the tramways at the beginning of the 20th century and clearance orders of the 1950's and 1960's.
