    Chatham Borough Council was incorporated on 22 November 1890 under the Municipal Corporations Act 1882, in succession to Chatham Local Board of Health (1849-1890) and the court leet. Rochester City Council, Chatham Borough Council and Strood Rural District Council were amalgamated to form a single new District Council on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972.
