Stoneware jug; 'Bellarmine' or Frechen item; large bulbous vessel; applied loop handle with 3 thumb impressions; applied 'mask' of bearded face on neck; body has applied medallion with pair of rampant heraldic beasts; mid orange-brown glaze Probably made in the Netherlands, this vessel incorporates a satirical image of Cardinal Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621). He was an opponent of the Dutch Reformed Church. Good condition with 1 large chip & crack in body.
