    Watercolour painting; shows convict prison near river at Chatham, c.1856; small troop of convicts with 2 armed guards, some soldiers on a firing range, on the river are 2 hulks and 1 steam & sail vessel; figures are executed in quite a 'naive' style. Originally thought by previous owner to be of a scene at Woolwich. The prison was on St Mary's Island, Chatham, built 1854-56 to hold 1200 convicts to provide labour for proposed dockyard extension; demolished 1898; mounted in glazed frame.
